    Simple Chevron Scarf

    Size 8 needles

    Cast on 37 sts.
    Row 1: Knit
    Row 2: K1, YO, K16, K3 tog, K16, YO K1.

Repeat these 2 rows until scarf is approximately
3" shorter than you want the finished length, ending with a K row.

Shaping the end:   (Note: this step is not necessary if you want a "forked" end! Just bind off here.)
    Row 1: K17, K3 tog, K17.
Row 2 and all even rows: Knit
    Row 3: K16, K3 tog, K16
    Row 5: K15, K3 tog, K15
    Row 7: K14, K3 tog, K14
    Row 9: K13, K3 tog, K13
Continue in this way, knitting one stitch less before the decrease on the odd rows, until 3 sts remain. Then K these 3  together and bind off the remaining  stitch
    Block and enjoy!

NOTE: This pattern can be made wider or narrower as follows:
Cast on an odd number of sts.   Take that number, subtract one, then divide in half.
Then subtract 2 from the number you have left, and this is the number of sts to K after the YO!

    500 HATS PROJECT Hat recipes:
These guidelines are for hats for the elementary students at a local Baltimore school, to be distributed before the Thanksgiving break.
All versions use worsted weight yarn, and have a  gauge of 5 sts = 1”.

Directions are for sizes: Sm (kindergarten, grades 1 & 2),  Med (grades 3 & 4)   Lg (fits 21” head, adult-size)
This hat can be made into many different styles from the basic pattern. Be creative with color and pattern!

    Materials:
16” circular needle, size 6 or 7 or 8 or whatever size will get you 5 sts = 1”
1 set double-pointed needles, same size as above.

#1  Rolled Brim Hat                    #2 Ribbed Cuff                           #3  Tassel Hat                                 #4  Ribbed Hat

    Directions:
Cast on 80 (88, 96) sts. Join into the round, being careful not to twist sts.

    Choose your edge:
1-    Rolled brim: Knit every row for 6 1/2” (7 1/2”, 8 1/2”), then go straight to Decreases.
    2-    Ribbed cuff: Work in either K2 P2 rib or K1 P1 for 4” (4 1/2”, 5”)
3-    Tassel hat: Work in rib as above or seed stitch for 2” (2 1/2”, 3”), then switch to K every row until you have 5 ½” from end of ribbing . Then go to Decreases for
    Style 3
4 -   Ribbed Hat: Work in K2 P2 rib for 8” (9”, 10”), then skip “body of hat” instructions and go straight to Ribbed Decreases.

    Body of  hat:
After you have worked an edge option above, continue hat by knitting every row until hat measures  3” (3 1/2 ”. 4”) from end of ribbing (styles 2 and 3)

    Decreases:
For Styles 1 and 2 only
    Row 1: * K2tog, K6, place marker.  Repeat from * across row.
Row 2 and all even rows:  Knit
Row 3: * Slip marker, K2 tog, K5.  Repeat from * across row.
Row 5: * Slip marker, K2 tog, K4.  Repeat from * across row.
Continue decreasing after markers on every odd row, switching  to DPN’s when there stitches are tight.
When you get to K2 tog across row, cut your yarn 12” from edge of work, thread through remaining sts and pull tight. Weave in this end and you’re done!

For Style 3, Tassel  Hat only:
This hat has no decreases!  We will do a 3-needle bindoff from the INSIDE for a nice finish as follows: turn hat inside out so purl side is facing you. Then from the
beginning of your      row, count half the stitches, then bend your needle in half, with both tips pointing to the right. Using one of the DPN’s, or a straight needle, knit 2
together (one from front needle and       one from back needle), then K the next 2 together from both needles, then pass the first st over the second stitch. You will
continue Knitting 2 tog from front and back needle, and binding off this way until you get to the end of the row. Leave a long tail (to tie on tassel or pom pom), thread
thru remaining stitch, and pull tight. Turn hat right side out, and sew tassels or pom poms at corners.

    For Style 4, Ribbed Decreases:
    Row 1: *K2, P2, K2, P2tog. repeat from * across row
Row 2 and all even rows:  Continue in ribbing across row, Knitting the K sts and Purling the P sts
    Row 3: *K2, P2tog, K2, P1. repeat from * across row
    Row 5: *K2tog, P1, K2, P1. Repeat from * across row
    Row 7: *K1, P1, K2tog, P1  Repeat from * across row
Row 9: *K2 tog across row
Row 10 K2 tog across row
Cut yarn, thread remaining sts onto it and pull tight. You can add a pom pom at the top if you like!
