Service Description

Have you ever wanted to spin your own yarn? In this class you will learn the basics of spinning wool roving into yarn using a drop spindle. You will gain the skills to spin a singles yarn, learn spinning related terms and techniques, and leave with instructions on how to ply your singles yarn into a two-ply yarn. Drop spinning begins with a handful of fiber in one hand, and with the other hand gently pulling fibers away from the mass, using the drop spindle to create twist. Twist gives the fibers strength to cling together as yarn. This is the essence of spinning—drawing out the fibers and adding twist until you have created a stable yarn. A top-whorl drop spindle and assorted multicolored wool roving to practice with is included in the class fee. Instructor Sarah Mikkelsen learned to spin using a drop spindle at National Knit in Public Day on the National Mall in 2005.
